Medical Devices and Emergency Medicine

The founders of EDE have for many years used their talents to produce some of the most innovative products in the medical marketplace. EDE continues to lend it’s contribution to a number of ongoing projects. We consider these products to be our bread and butter as this is where a large proportion of our experience lies.

A few of our projects.

  • Construct Medical SÜPEVAC (aka Gas Sucker)

SÜPEVAC —Single Use Upper Pharyngeal Emergency Vacuum. Portable gas venturi powered suction unit. Provides on-demand suction for 5 minutes of continuous use. The device does not require large lithium batteries, pumps or moving parts. It has a small form factor and an excellent shelf life so it can sit dormant in a first aid kit for years until required by an emergency situation. The technology is similar to that of an inflatable lifejacket found on an airliner. The unit is also very light so naturally ideal for emergency and passenger aircraft as well as crash carts, ambulances and other situations where first aid suction may be required.

  • Teleflex Guardian Airway

One of Dr Esnouf’s most successful inventions; The Guardian revolutionised airway management in a number of ways. The Guardian and it’s derivatives to this day still hold the crown as the gold standard in laryngeal mask technology. The genius in this design relates to the safety and ease of use achieved by its inherent design as well as the addition of the Cuff Pilot. A simple yet profoundly reliable and effective method of inflating the cuff of the laryngeal mask to the correct pressure every intubation. This device has been instrumental in millions of successful intubations around the globe and continues to do so.

  • Construct Medical S.T.I.G

Steerable Tracheal Intubation Guide. Often referred to as a Flexi Tip Bougie. This device represents a significant leap forward in the field of emergency medicine, winning the EMS World innovation award in 2019. A number of key opinion leaders in the fields of EMS and anaesthetics have championed the use of the STIG for difficult intubation, including for COVID-19 cases. In situations where a patient requiring intubation presents with a collapsed, damaged or occluded airway; it may not be possible to easily insert an endo-tracheal tube (breathing tube). The STIG is contoured to follow the natural curvature of the airway and the steerable tip easily makes it through the vocal chords. Once in place the breathing tube is slid over the top and the STIG pulled out, leaving the patient intubated for ventilation. During clinical studies, over 90% of those who attempt this procedure nail it first try compared to around 15% for the predicate device commonly in use.
